Riesling Roots: Meet Tim Romer, Bringing Mosel Valley Passion to Greystone
Meet Tim Romer, one of Greystone’s passionate interns joining us from Germany’s iconic Mosel Valley—home to some of the world’s finest Riesling. With a deep-rooted family heritage in winemaking, Tim brings his unique perspective and experience to our vineyards in Waipara.
As we prepare for an exciting vintage season, Tim shares his journey from working at his parents’ winery to discovering new approaches to viticulture in New Zealand. His admiration for Riesling and enthusiasm for learning reflect the collaborative spirit of this year’s harvest team.

Q&A: Tim Romer on Winemaking, Riesling, and His Journey from Mosel to Greystone
Q: Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?
A: I was born in Germany and live in the Mosel Valley.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in the wine industry, and how long have you been working in this field?
A: I grew up on a winery owned by my parents. This inspired me to complete an apprenticeship at a winery so that I can take over the business one day.
Q: What’s your line of work back home?
A: I work at my parents’ winery.
Q: How did you first learn about Greystone Wines?
A: My friend and neighbour Lucas worked with you and was thrilled. He told me many great stories about your winery and got me excited about it.
Q: What excites you the most about this upcoming vintage?
A: To learn new things and see how viticulture is done on the other side of the world.
Q: Have you visited New Zealand before, or have you explored other winemaking regions?
A: I have not been to New Zealand yet. I have only explored the German wine regions and Luxembourg. However, I have already tasted many international wines.
Q: What do you enjoy most about vintage?
A: Seeing the result of what you have worked for all year in the vineyard.
Q: Was wine a part of your family life growing up? Did your parents drink it or let you try a sip?
A: Growing up on a winery, wine and viticulture have always been part of my life. Since I was legally allowed to drink wine, I have enjoyed tasting many different wines with my parents and friends.
Q: If you could choose one last wine to enjoy, what would it be (death row wine)?
A: I would choose a Riesling Kabinett from the Mosel Valley.
Q: What future aspirations do you have – in or out of the wine world?
A: I want to take over my parents’ winery one day.
